Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the tolerance of the term scapulo-humeral periarthritis and verify in which cases the adoption of this diagnosis can be sufficiently correct. We have evaluated 88 patients who were referred with a specialistic diagnosis of scapulohumeral periarthritis during 1992. This series of patients demonstrates how different pathologies of the articular complex of the shoulder are still erroneously gathered under a generic diagnosis of scapulo-humeral periarthritis. In our opinion the use of this term can be accepted for the initial setting of some pathologies characterized by prevalent inflammatory changes of the articular and periarticular soft tissue, as the impingement syndrome, the calcifying tendinitis and the adhesive capsulitis. On the other side, an indiscriminate abuse of the term cannot be justified to describe degenerative joint diseases. In such cases the acknowledgement of the patho-physiology and the clinical and radiographic findings can lead to the correct diagnosis without performing invasive or expensive strumental studies.
