Abstract
Background. The authors report their experience in the use of 111In-DTPA-octreotide scintigraphy (Octreoscan) in detecting the recurrences of neuroendocrine carcinomas of the lung, already resected. Methods. From july 1995 to february 1996, at the Department of Thoracic Surgery of the University of Torino four cases of carcinoid syndrome were observed in four patients who underwent lobectomy for bronchopulmonary carcinoid. Results. The scintigraphy allowed to demonstrate the presence of liver metastases in one case, and mediastinal recurrences in the other, confirmed by traditional radiological examinations and by histology. All the patients started a medical therapy with octreotide at the dose of 1500 μg/die followed by a good control of the symptoms.
