Abstract
[Machine translation] In the sheet, the author addresses, in an unpublished key, the study of xylography with the effigy of Giuliano di Piero de' Medici, which belongs to the collection of the 'Elogia' by Paolo Giovio (1483-1552), dedicated to illustrious men for political and military virtue, in the 1575 edition, previously printed without the portraits, in 1551. The effigy of Giuliano, killed in the Conspiracy of the Fools of 1478, is related to the portrait of the brother of Lorenzo the Magnificent (and father of Pope Clement VII) painted by Sandro Botticelli after the death of the young man and known in four versions. A portrait of Giuliano, a copy made around 1550, was present in Giovio's collection, where the author of the woodcut, Tobias Stimmer (1539-1584), an artist from Schaffhausen sent between 1569 and 1570 by the printer Pietro Perna to Como to make 'copies' of the portraits for the illustration of the 'Elogia'. In the text, the author analyzes the genesis of the image starting from Botticelli's model, verifying versions and variants, but above all by carefully examining the text and some specific words that Giovio dedicates precisely to the portrait of Giuliano de' Medici. According to the interpretation proposed by the author, image and text are to be read as a form of uncovertly Medici celebration by Jovius who, in his eulogy to Giuliano, celebrates his son, the second Medici Pope, Clement VII. Therefore, in the card, the examination of the role and function of the effigy of Giuliano de' Medici, in its most intimate relationship with the text of Paolo Giovio, appears crucial.
