Abstract
In traditional animal learning theory, stimuli, responses, and outcomes determine an animal's behavior. But how can animals, or people, for that matter, make decisions regarding stimuli they have never encountered? One way involves abstract response strategies. These strategies are considered abstract because they do not depend on experience with particular, previously experienced stimulus-response mappings.
