Abstract

Extensive research done in the last few years have greatly extended our knowledge of platelet physiology and pathology. In particular, many of the membrane receptors involved in platelet adhesion and aggregation have been identified. Moreover, the mechanisms by which certain subendothelial and plasma molecules, upon interaction with the platelet surface, may mediate platelet functions have been described. Since our knowledge for a large part derives from experiments performed under conditions quite different from those occurring in the blood stream, additional studies are required to fully understand the 'in vivo' mechanisms of platelet functions and dysfunctions.
