Abstract
Silicon detectors find an ever increasing spectrum of applications in high energy physics, which range from calorimeters to vertex detectors, precision beam hodoscopes and sophisticated trigger devices. In this paper, we present a short review of one of these applications, namely the use of silicon counters in the very high multiplicity environment of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.
