Abstract

What strategies for the future of Italian travel agents? - This study considers some strategic options that can sustain the improvement of travel agencies performance. The analysis starts from the evaluation of the efficiency levels of a group of 35 Italian travel agents with respect to a frontier of best practice, computed using Data Envelopment Analysis. Subsequently, in a second stage, the efficiency scores are related (by means of a regression) to a set of variables of interest, with the aim of highlighting some elements explaining the performance. In the results, significant advantages from the joint provision of intermediation and tour operator services appear. Dealing mainly with incoming tourists is important as well, in terms of revenues improvement.
