Abstract
Luigi Pareyson's thought starts - in the 1940s - from the analysis of contemporary philosophy's condition, whose main feature was the crisis of the metaphysical rationalism that had reached its climax with Hegel. Existential philosophy emphasizes this crisis, but can't overcome it, since it is still bound to Hegel's concepts, in particular to the thesis of the negativity of finite being, understood as complementary to infinite. Pareyson elaborates a critique both of complementarity and of Hegel's conception of the history of philosophy, understood as a univocal process culminating in Hegel's own absolute and ultimate philosophy. From this basis Pareyson develops his own ontological personalism and his hermeneutics, followed at last by the ontology of freedom. This paper examines Pareyson's criticism of Hegel and the answers that can be given from Hegel's standpoint.
