Abstract
Various microwave techniques to detect oil spills, to monitor the surface water quality, and to detect the surface films by using microwave instruments was developed. The instrument was found to be an effective tool to measure oil spill wave damping both in sea, and in tank. The microwave probe which measures wave height on an absolute, self-calibrating scale, and three band scatterometer was developed with the aim of detecting damping of short gravito-capillary waves in the sea. It was found that the basic element of this probe is a Tefon-coated wire held straight vertical; the lower end of which is dipped in water, and the other end is fed by a microwave source.
