Abstract

[Machine translation] Isaac de Benserade (1613-1691) was one of the French poets, librettists and playwrights most appreciated by his contemporaries. If modern France has not included it in its literary Pantheon, in recent years his work has been considered with renewed interest by critics; however, with the exception of the comedy Iphis et Iante, his theatrical production of the years 1634-1639 (decisive years for the definition of modern French dramaturgy) has so far not been the subject of in-depth investigations. This contribution intends to propose a first cross-sectional reflection on the five plays composed by Benserade between 1634 and 1639, focusing on the opening scenes. The comedy Iphis and Iante, the tragicomedy Gustaphe and the tragedies Cléopâtre, The Death of Achille and Méléagre share a remarkable trait: in each of these works the opening scene is in fact based on the reversal of the constants of the theatrical genre practiced or the themes addressed; but this reversal is not projected on the continuation of dramatic action, which is realigned each time to the dramaturgical and poetic models of reference. The examination of the paratexts of the works studied and the comparative analysis of the opening scenes of Benserade's plays and those of his rivals show how, for Benserade, the beginning of the plays is a privileged place for the construction and promotion of a modern authorial identity sensitive to the taste of a worldly audience. Far from making a real break with respect to tradition and contemporary dramaturgical models, Benserade shows in the opening scenes an innovator's posture and a manifest adherence to the aesthetics of the 'vulgaires' and then seeks, in the development of the works, the approval of the 'doctes'.
