Abstract
Current democratic systems are characterised by deep socio-political inequalities that undermine democratic control and seem to justify the idea of a crisis of democracy. Many popular movements have recently challenged this state of affairs; while traditional parties and institutions criticised them for their populist slogans, new populist parties, like Podemos, acknowledged the legitimacy of their claims and try to translate them in a political program. My analysis will show that misrecognising these movements show a fear of democracy and its values that is, however, entailed by populism as well.
