Abstract
Russia’s war against Ukraine as a genocidal project · This essay addresses the question of whether it is possible to consider Russia’s war against Ukraine as genocide. The definition of the term genocide is illustrated through its historical origins, which lie in part in the Stalinist repressions against Ukraine of the early 1930s. The essay goes on to describe the ideological underpinnings of the Russian attack through an analysis of Putin’s speech of February 21, 2022, in which the Russian president condemned Lenin’s nationalities policy and praised Stalin’s repressions. Next, it is illustrated how the construction of Ukrainian and Russian national belonging has proceeded by increasingly explicit opposition over the past thirty years. The analysis of Russian propaganda and of the military actions of Russian troops allows to assert that a project of genocide of the Ukrainian people has in fact been implemented by the Russian army.
