Abstract
[Machine translation] If Thomas Corneille's plays have received increasing critical attention in recent decades, other parts of the vast production of this tireless polygraph, such as its translations from Latin, remain to be investigated. This contribution invites us to consider the relationship between these two components of Thomas Corneille's work, examining his collection of translations of Heroids and Ovidian Loves (1670) and relating it to his tragedy Ariane (1672). In Thomas Corneille's translations, there is a tendency to bring out latent meanings of the Ovidian text, amplifying the pathetic data in the translations of the Heroids and explaining, in the translations of the Loves, the exaltation of love inconstancy. This tendency is fully reflected in the tragedy Ariane: if the characters of Ariane and Thésée embody the two models of love illustrated in the 1670 translations (Ariane appears to be a cocoon to the heroine of Heroid X, while Thésée refers to the figure of the fickle lover of the Loves), Act V constitutes a transposition, in a courtly context, of Heroid X. The translation of Heroid X published by Thomas Corneille in 1670 will be brought to the stage, in a shortened and modified version, in the initial monologue of the comedy Roïque by Jean Donneau de Visé entitled Le Mariage de Bachus et d'Ariane. Represented and published in 1672, this play constitutes a sort of continuation of Thomas Corneille's Ariane: if this ends with a free rewriting of Heroid X, that one opens with an adaptation (more faithful to the source) of the same hypothesis.
