Abstract

Three women suffered from partial cryptogenetic epilepsy resistant to treatment with PB + CBZ. They had no clear history of psychosis. After 1-12 months of GVG treatment as add-on drug (2-4 g daily), they showed a clear improvement in their seizure frequency. However, they developed a psychotic picture which required neuroleptic administration and GVG withdrawal. We think these cases resemble those of 'forced normalization' described by Landolt. A common factor were low levels of plasma folic acid.
