Abstract
Water adsorption at 300 K on a MgO powder surface was studied by i.r. spectroscopy and microgravimetry, showing that a full monolayer of hydroxyls is formed which, in turn, weakly adsorbs a further monolayer of undissociated water molecules. Various bands in the i.r. spectra are related to different OH- families on extended {100} planes and on corner and edge sites.
