Abstract

With jean Bodin's La République (1576) a new conception of sovereignty, distinctive of modern States, emerges. The main heirs of this model are Paolo Sarpi and Thomas Hobbes, who further develop Bodin's premises, implementing them in the direction of a necessary supremacy of temporal power over religious authority. Comparing the works of these authors, extremely similar political ideas and solutions emerge, which could be explained considering the contacts between the two thinkers and the common historical-cultural context.
