Abstract
In Don Quixote a series of anomalies can be observed in the representation of dialogue which has not ceased to surprise critics. One of these anomalies –the frequent blurring of the boundaries between the narrator’s words and the characters’– has led critics to speak of free indirect speech in some cases. This article attempts to catalogue and study the various occurrences of the phenomenon, focusing on its semantic, functional and structural effects on Cervantes’ masterpiece and on the literary genre itself.
