Abstract
[Machine translation] The essay is introductory to the section dedicated to the theme of Botticelli portraitist of the Parisian exhibition 'Botticelli. Artiste & Designer' (Paris, Musée Jacquemart-André, September 10, 2021 - January 24, 2022). Given the crucial role played by Sandro Botticelli in the first genesis of the modern portrait in Italy, the text concentrates (for reasons of space) the main conceptual and methodological issues related to this story, so as to open up a more articulated reading of the scientific data of the linked section. In an unprecedented and concise way, the essay addresses both the question of the 'civic' portrait, and the 'infamous' one (1478, Florence, door of the Palazzo della Dogana, portraits of the figures of the 'proditores', that is, the 'traitors' who had participated in the Conspiracy of the Fools, removed in 1494), and the joint linked to the commitment to the Sistine Chapel in Rome, where Botticelli was engaged in a portrait 'tour de force'. However, the essay does not intend to have a historical flow, but rather to focus and then deepen in a more unprecedented key (and even within the limits of space allowed) the conceptual junctions inherent in the genesis of the modern portrait as developed by Sandro Botticelli between the seventies and nineties of the fifteenth century. According to the author's precise methodological choice, the research and the text that reflects it, therefore, give special value to some crucial themes, but often, in the past, overlooked by critics: ability to place the figure in space (internal or external), caliber of pose, cut and rotation, the importance of naturalism, linguistic tools of the communicative charism, rendering of the mental habitus of the portrayed subject, use of pictorial tools, rejection of the narrative register, comparison with sculpture, allegorical portrait. Due to the format and structure of the volume, the text is not equipped with images.
