Abstract

Due to the importance of their presence in the economy and their adoption of sustainability, family businesses have recently attracted interest in sustainability research. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse and provide an overview of the main drivers and barriers to sustainability implementation in firms, with a focus on family firms. The study examined studies published between 2010 and 2023, using a contingency theory-based framework, systematic literature review and manual content analysis as research methods. Findings highlight common internal and external drivers and barriers to family business sustainability, providing practical and theoretical implications and future research agenda.
