Abstract
[Machine translation] The works of Ovid and the figure of Ovid himself are the subject of profoundly different aesthetic and moral considerations in early modern France. Operating in an extremely dynamic and complex cultural and editorial context, Ovidio's translators are attentive not only to claiming the stylistic merits of their translations, but also to affirming the legitimacy of the very choice to translate those Ovidian texts that lend themselves to criticism from the most severe readers, such as the Amores or the Ars amatoria. The prefaces of the translations are where translators carry out their work of defense and self-promotion, trying to persuade readers of the interest of the text provided and of the human and intellectual qualities of Ovid, and at the same time illustrating the principles that guided their translation work. But the prefaces also aim at positioning translators in the receptive context, explaining the relationships they have with competing translators in addition to their consideration of dominant editorial and exegetical practices. The present work aims to analyze the rhetorical strategies of self-promotion adopted by Ovid's translators in the 16th-17th centuries, focusing on an element that most of the prefaces have in common: the construction of a relationship of connivance between translator and reader.
