Abstract

The general charge properties of the hadronic final state produced in μ⁺p and μ⁺d interactions at 280 GeV are investigated. Quark charge retention and local charge compensation is observed. The ratio F₂ ⁿ/F₂ ^p of the neutron to proton structure function is derived from the measurement of the average hadronic charge in μd interactions.
