Abstract

This paper aims to analyze German and Italian structures which open with an adjective or a noun followed by a sentence introduced by the complementizer dass/che (e.g. schön, dass du hier bist / fortuna che non era niente). The rst part of these constructions is elliptical, i.e. verb and verb arguments, for example the subject, are omitted. The second part is a clause which functions as the subject or the direct object of the preceding elliptical sentence. Based on the observation of authentic spoken data, the study describes and compares the constructions in the two languages, investigates the morpho-lexical features of opening adjectives and nouns, highlighting their possible modi cations (through intensi ers or attributes), and examines the syntactic characteristics of sentences in- troduced by dass and che. The corpus is constituted by audio- and video-recordings of spontaneous interactions and by TV talk shows in German and Italian. The data are transcribed according to GAT2 conventions.
