Dettagli progetto

Description

Population ageing is a key demographic phenomenon in all western countries and it raises many fundamental questions for policy makers regarding the health, health care utilization and income and financial wellbeing of the elderly. The HealthyAGE project is designed to address these questions. The project will contribute to the scientific debate on health care utilization for the elderly. First, we will investigate the network of health care services for patients' chronic illnesses in the Lombardy Region in Italy. We focus on Lombardy since the Regional Government provides us a unique and novel database that combines information on all health care services that are delivered to patients (primary care, emergency care, hospital admissions, ambulatorial care, pharmaceutical treatments, and the associated costs). Second, we will expand the literature on the utilization of preventive care by investigating the determinants for cancer screening behaviours. Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world, and its incidence is higher among the elderly than the overall population. Primary prevention through screening programs has been proven to lead to a decrease in cancer incidence and mortality in the population. By examining data from the US, we will shed light on the determinants of cancer screening behaviours.
