Dettagli progetto
Description
In recent years, the issue of censorship has been of growing interest, fueled by the vital sector of mass media studies, to which the advent of the Internet has given new impetus and vigor. These works, carried out in an interdisciplinary framework from law and psychology to neuroscience, have spawned a heated debate on the delicate relationship between freedom of opinion, pervasive forms of media control and the need for their accountable use to protect the truthfulness of information. A discussion of like importance has also reverberated in historical studies, which, in Italy have focused on the study of ecclesiastical censorship and the control exercised over the press by the Roman Inquisition. In the last twenty years, also following the opening of the archives of the Inquisition and the Congregation of the Index, scholars from various backgrounds have examined the ways in which the Vatican’s censorship spread its network of influence on the Italian press through a shrewd interweaving of informal means, pedagogical influence and coercion. This analysis, while starting from the observation that there never was an ahistorical and universal idea of freedom of opinion, showed how censorship is a complex process, difficult to reduce to a matter of simple repression. Despite the important insights of these works, the historiography on censorship there have been no occasions in Italy for research and overall comparison. No PRIN has yet been devoted to the subject, and the study of inquisitorial censorship has been left to individual initiatives. To fill this coordination gap, some of the participants in this study cycle have come together to promote new research and complete projects already under way, coordinating them into a coherent framework. The project intends to take stock of the historiographical work in progress concerning censorship, by probing as yet unexplored fields of investigation: preventive censorship; the control of orality and popular rituals, and the political control of information. It also proposes to complete Giuliano Gasparri and Marta Fattori’s publication on the most important censoring of philosophers. The project aims to: 1) Promote a comparison between the different historiographical positions through an ongoing seminar, workshops and an international conference. 2) Collect sources and product repertoires in an open access digital edition with database. 3) Establish a hard copy series of the most relevant monographs produced during the research. The final result of the project will therefore consist of a dual series: the first digital one in open access with an interconnected database including sources, repertoires and databases; and the second paper one that include the most relevant monographs produced with the philosophers’ censorship edition. These series will create scientifically proven, definitive publications destined to live beyond the PRIN.
