The trends of the last decade draw a complex scenario, in which historical contradictions and new opportunities are combined, also seen in the light of the current pandemic situation. Heritage represents a central component of the cultural system in our country, because the sustainability of protection and conservation is a precondition for the creation of both value and social cohesion, particularly mentioned in European planning documents, and of economic value and weight, since Italian cultural heritage is today more than ever a national priority, whose waiver would result in an irreversible loss. The relationship between protection and enhancement involves several steps: accessibility to heritage requires a significant effort from a cultural, managerial and financial point of view; the variety of heritage itself requires the presence of different skills for its management and renewed models of governance. Furthermore, it appears to be constantly growing in size and while the consistency of what is managed by the State tends to remain stable over time, the number of institutions started with the contribution of other actors has increased significantly. Finally, the territorial presence of heritage represents a different concentration of sites and expresses different capacities for protection and enhancement. The call for greater organicity of the interventions therefore seems appropriate. In this regard, the contribution consists of a mosaic of experiences: the attention to poles and museum systems with particular reference to some realities in Puglia such as the Iatta National Archaeological Museum in Ruvo (Bari), the only example in Italy of a nineteenth-century private collection, which has remained unchanged by the original museographic conception and the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, which is virtuously part of a project for the conversion and redevelopment of the city; the enhancement of the mountain context through the Museum of the Alps at the Forte di Bard, based on emotion, is the Turin Mountain Museum, equipped with a wealth of unique objects and a documentation area and a national library; ecomuseum and participatory projects in Piedmont and other regions that insist, even in a tourist key, on widespread material and intangible heritage.
