Abstract

[Machine translation] Antonio Vallisneri (1661-1730) has been described as the “most famous propagandist” of Ovist preexistence, i.e. the generation theory most consistent with mechanistic orthodoxy. In fact, he spent most of his experimental and intellectual energies in the battle against putredo and against the mysterious forces that were supposed to be at work in the formation of living beings. However, for Vallisneri and for the network of which it is the center, there are 'laboratories of life' where vital specificity defeats new medicine. Within these 'laboratories', we considered the writings and even more the actions of Vallisneri and his' friends', as well as their confrontation with the best known representatives of the philosophical thought of the time.
