Abstract

[Machine translation] In this text, starting from the analysis of the conference that Umberto Eco gave in 1995 at Columbia University in New York on eternal fascism, I intend to reflect succinctly on fascism as a metahistorical category; a cultural and political archetype defined by some persistent characteristics, which can also be found in certain trends of contemporary populism. The strong hierarchical spirit and devotion to a charismatic leader, together with the contempt for parliamentarism, the sense of betrayal and the need for reassurance, give substance to the social and individual frustrations of the 'people', who are conditioned by the populist lexicon of the mass media. The current upsurge of neofascist movements, which exploit the anger of those defeated by globalization and urban discomfort, shows how the fascist mentality, in different forms, has remained active even in the democratic system. Precisely because of this fact, and in view of the profound crisis that representative democracy is going through, I then intend to argue how there is a need, today more than ever, to recognize the value of the Resistance and its extraordinary relevance.
