Abstract

The aim of this essay is to reflect on the role and status that may philosophy take on in the new context of cultural and religious pluralism that characterizes the world today. The paper analyzes primarily the contemporary attempts to develop an intercultural philosophy; secondly it reflects on the contribution that hermeneutics can provide to deal with these problems. The thesis is that hermeneutics is a particularly suitable approach to face the issue of pluralism; hermeneutics is a discipline aware of its perspective nature, and at the same time keeps open the question of truth. However, hermeneutics, developed within the framework of Western thought, must be redesigned to become adequate to the new horizon of intercultural relations.
