Abstract
[Machine translation] The thesis aims to reconstruct a geography of welfare in relation to the credit-type activity provided, between the end of the Middle Ages and 1713, by the Monti di Pietà and Frumentari that operated within localities included in a large territorial frontier area, which includes most of Eastern Piedmont, the Canavese, part of the Province of Asti and Lomellina. Specifically, the Monti di Pietà erected in Vercelli, Biella, Crescentino, Sordevolo, Novara, Arona, Borgomanero, Orta San Giulio, Omegna, Ivrea, Casale Monferrato, Trino, Felizzano, Alessandria and Vigevano and the Frumentary Mountains established in Prato Sesia, Rosignano Monferrato, Altavilla Monferrato, Moncalvo, Tonco, Castelspina, Predosa, Castellazzo Bormida, Castelferro, Quargnento, Zeme are the subject of investigation. Biano, Tromello and Borgo San Martino, of which, through the adoption of a critical chronological narrative, are analyzed the institutional and operational events, also in a comparative perspective. Particular attention is paid to the following issues: welfare and relief measures for the poor adopted in urban areas; the role played by minority preaching in promotion , . , S , of the Mountains of Piety between Piedmont and Lombardy in the second half of the 15th century, especially in terms of combating poverty and usury; the relations maintained by the central authorities and city authorities with the Jews on the one hand and with the Mountains of Piety on the other; the relations established between the Israeli generative banks and the Mountains of Piety and the role they played in the credit and pawn loan market; the control exercised by the Church over the work of the Mountains under the legislation enacted in the context of Counter-reform; the impact of war events, economic phases and embezzlement on the governance of the Mountains, on the activity carried out by them and on the custody of pawns.
