Abstract

The rational approach to the development of new antiepileptic drugs should be based on knowledge of basic events responsable for epilepsy. Epileptogenesis is caused by impairment of GABA-mediated inhibition, enhancement of excitatory aminoacid neurotransmission and peculiar membrane properties of some pyramidal neurons. A review is made of the new drugs developed as a pharmacological manipulation of the main mechanisms of epileptogenesis.
