Abstract

The thermal and photochemical reactions between Fe3(CO)12, Ru3(CO)12, and alkynes (PhC2Ph, EtC2Et) afford three novel heterometallic derivatives, namely, Fe2Ru(CO)9(alkyne), Fe2Ru(CO)8(alkyne)2, and FeRu(CO)6(alkyne)2. The fact that Fe2Ru(CO)9(alkyne) is obtained also from the thermal reaction of Fe3(CO)9(alkyne) and Ru3(CO)12 suggests that a possible pathway to its formation passes through the coordinatively unsaturated Fe2(CO)6(alkyne) complex. The solid-state X-ray structure of Fe2Ru(CO)9(PhC2Ph) is reported, and its electronic structure is discussed on the basis of CNDO calculations.
