Abstract
[Machine translation] This article examines the entry of the railway lexicon into Italian vocabulary, of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, observing the slow acceptance of words that were then spreading in the use and daily life of ordinary people, even through the pages of newspapers, despite indications and some attempts at rejection made by lexicographers. To trace this history of competing terms, some of which have now become 'missing words', dictionaries of neologisms and usage dictionaries are mainly consulted.
