Abstract

This paper presents some observations on burial sites located in monasteries and canon complexes from the Central and Late Middle Ages, by considering written as well as archaeological sources. The analysis of the spatial distribution of these ‘privileged’ graves shows that they are located in several different places, like the inside or around the main church (where sometimes they are organised in a cemetery), the cloister or a chapel. The connection between the place of the tomb and its typology/structure/decoration is equally investigated, leading to some important suggestions about the status of the dead (laymen/monk or canon) and his or her social position.
