Abstract
[Machine translation] Starting from some historiographical cornerstones in the approach to the topic of the use of sculpture in the funerary environment, the article focuses on sculpted funerary plates and sarcophagi from the Italian context, dated from the 7th to the 10th century. The developments in decoration are presented, not only from a historical-artistic perspective, but also seeking, as a methodological code, to link the choices of specific motifs or the decorative system to wider cultural aspects. The relationships between figurative components and inscriptions are also analyzed, also investigating the different tomb types to which the plates were related, the problems related to the original contexts of use, the production aspects (from the supply of stone materials to the organization of the workshops), with an eye also aimed at the users of these objects. Finally, the very idea of 'funerary sculpture' in the early Middle Ages is discussed, examining specific details in the wider context of the sculpture of this period., The essay is part of a historiographic framework that is currently very productive within the international scientific community, touching, for example, on aspects such as the concepts of 'privilege' and 'prestige' of the grave. It also stimulates new reflections by correlating disciplinary fields that are only apparently distant, that is, on the one hand, funerary archeology, and on the other, sculptural production.
