Abstract

[Machine translation] Antimicrobial photodynamic chemotherapy (PACT) represents an alternative antimicrobial treatment in the case of drug-resistant microorganisms. This method is based on the use of a laser light to activate a photosensitizing molecule with the consequent formation of oxygen radicals, which cause localized tissue damage and cell death. Toluidine blue is widely used in clinical practice as a photosensitizer and the diode laser as a light source. In this in vitro study, the effects of PACT on human keratinocyte proliferation were evaluated., Treatment with toluidine blue resulted in reduced cell proliferation. PACT may cause toxic effects on actively proliferating keratinocytes around the periodontal pockets. The reduction of both cell proliferation and the synthesis of enzymes involved in the wound healing process may alter the clinical evolution of patients undergoing this treatment.
