Abstract
How can the issue of religion be rethought in the horizon of the contemporary world, strongly marked by the experience of cultural and religious pluralism? The text proposes two directions: the first moving from the present discussion in Western thought; the second reviewing contributions by two philosophers of the Kyoto school, inspired by Zen Buddhism. The ensuing themes are: criticism of the concept of separate transcendence; the issue of sense; a broadened concept of religious experience as proposed by Japanese philosophers and God’s suffering, urging reflection on both traditions.
