Abstract

[Machine translation] Presentation of the draft progressive electronic edition of Panzini's “Modern Dictionary”, the most famous Italian dictionary of neologisms, a historical and linguistic overview of early-twentieth-century Italy (eight editions with updates and expansions published between 1905 and 1942, with an eighth posthumous edition edited by Migliorini and Schiaffini). The author traces the history of the dictionary, noting the innovations introduced by Panzini (e.g. attention to the dates of the first attestation of the words), explains some edition criteria, declaring as models the progressive edition of Artusi edited by Alberto Capatti and the digital critical edition of Leopardi's “Songs” by Paola Italia. The progressive electronic edition of the “Modern Dictionary” will show the progression of the expansions and corrections introduced by Panzini in the transition from one edition to another, detailing the revision work to which the author dedicated himself for almost forty years (the first edition of the entry in the text and the apparatus the subsequent expansions, summary interventions or corrections). The summary will be mobile (possibility of advanced searches), dated (year of inclusion of the entry in the dictionary) and appropriately marked (sectorial scope, type of forestry, belonging to the category of proverbs and idioms, slang voices and more). Consider that very few libraries have all eight editions of Panzini's “Modern Dictionary” in their catalog, so this UPO project will also be useful because it will make available to scholars, on a single platform, the text of all editions of the work.
