Abstract
[Machine translation] The essay is dedicated to the Marquis Tancredi Falletti di Barolo (1782-1838), one of the most eminent Piedmontese aristocrats of the early 19th century. A portrait of him is preserved in the gallery of benefactors of the Sant'Andrea Hospital in Vercelli: starting from this pictorial testimony, the author reconstructs and illustrates the ties of the Marquis Barolo with the Vercelli area, and in particular with the community of Villarboit. This town was one of the fiefdoms of the Falletti family: here the Marquis Tancredi sat on the city council for a decade (1829-1838) and transformed the landscape by cultivating hundreds of hectares of Baraggia. He reorganized his estate in Busonengo, starting to experiment with new agronomic techniques known during his numerous trips to Europe. He was one of the first and main exponents of Piedmontese social Catholicism: in this context he gave numerous and significant benefits, including the one in favor of the Vercelli Hospital, reserved for the sick of Villarbioit and Busonengo.
