Abstract

[Machine translation] The historic city of Venice has been plagued by problems related to monoculture tourism for years and is at the center of the heated debate related to the transit and landing of cruise ships affecting different cities and areas of the world. According to various studies, in fact, large ships have a strong impact on the fragile lagoon ecosystem and increase the already high tourist pressure, however, without bringing even great benefits to the local economy. The presence of cruise ships in Venice has profoundly changed both the perception of its particular habitat and the way of looking at and representing the Venetian landscape. The present contribution, therefore, aims to investigate these “contested landscapes”, analyzing the way in which the representation of the relationship between Venice and its lagoon with large ships has, from time to time, been exalted or stigmatized by the various subjects involved in the conflict. Specifically, the audiovisual materials produced, from 2010 to 2022, by activists, artists, economic actors, cruise passengers and news channels will be examined.
