Abstract

[Machine translation] Nicia can be considered a model of 5th century Athenian oikonomos who managed her properties with great scruples, reproducing the same managerial attention also in political life, as emerges, for example, in speeches about the necessary preparations for the expedition to Sicily. In this capacity, he represents the overlap between the figure of the oikonomos and that of the politician, for whom the polis is nothing more than a larger oikos, described in the fourth century by Plato and Xenophon, thus setting himself at the beginning of that process of professionalization of oikonomia that will be completed in the following century with the full separation between the private sphere and the public sphere.
