Abstract

[Machine translation] The essay considers the Italian monastic world at the time of Berengar I, following his political parable, even before the conquest of royal power and then imperial power. The family context and the youthful experience of the future king are closely intertwined with monasticism, intertwining that, mutatis mutandis, will continue in the following, troubled decades. The monasteries of the time of Berengario are considered from different points of view: as patrimonial and economic centers, as strong points in the territory (also in relation to the growing militarization of this), as an object of institutional and legal conflict, as spaces of devotion and memory. The material reality of some contexts subject to excavation or studies on elevations is also examined, which reveal interesting cross-sections of the organization or of the topographic-architectural choices made within the monastic centers of this time.
