Abstract

[Machine translation] The contribution deals with the topic of monastic mobility, investigated through the study of written sources and, however limited of problematic interpretation, of archaeological sources. The phenomenon of pilgrimage is intertwined with other forms of mobility, from the complex theme of wandering monks, on which various texts, starting from the Rules of the Master and Benedict, insist, stigmatizing him, on the visits that some monks or the abbots themselves made to confreres of other monasteries, with the consequent need for accommodation, up to leaving the monastery for reasons of utility, linked to the administrative and managerial needs that regulate the economic life of the monastery. Monastic mobility is constantly in dialogue, sometimes in conflict, with the theme of stability, a relationship that also experienced important transformations during the early Middle Ages., The article provides a contribution, according to a specific angle, to the great theme of mobility in the medieval world, the subject of significant attention in recent years, and shows its complex facets, intertwining the analysis of written sources with assessments of a topographic-spatial nature on the profound meaning of movement within monasteries and the practical repercussions that underlie it.
