Abstract
[Machine translation] The zetetai were extraordinary Athenian magistrates appointed at the opportunity to carry out investigations into particularly serious crimes against the polis, such as empiety and embezzlement. Although they represent the only known case of public prosecution in the Attic judiciary, zetetai have rarely attracted the attention of modern scholars. This study seeks to reconstruct their skills based on the testimonies relating to their participation in the investigations of the scandal of the Herms and the Mysteries in 415 and on some cases of embezzlement of public property during the fourth century BC.
