Abstract
[Machine translation] Agricultural work in the farmhouse and in the fields, religious life, children's games and adult leisure, forms of traditional dress, rural architecture, landscape, means of transport, military life, are some of the themes developed in the volume through the photographic eye of Don Emilio Bellino (Savigliano, 1864 - Cinzano, 1920), an original figure of pastor, amateur photographer. The more than four hundred photographs in the book - relating to Cinzano (Turin) and more generally to the Piedmontese territory, but not only - help to describe a cross-section of Italian society at a crucial historical moment, at the transition between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The advent of modernity, to which the pastor-photographer seems to be sensibly attracted and to whom he seems to sense the epochal future transformations, pushes him to analytically document the rural world of his time through the use of photography. An unprecedented corpus of images that today, a century after its creation, constitutes a precious ethnographic source for interpreting Piedmont, its agriculture, its landscapes, its people. A dispersed photographic heritage that is for the first time organically collected and presented in this volume.
