ArchiData is the electronic archive of lexical backdating of the Accademia della Crusca (www.archidata.info). The authors of the contributions collected here propose summaries in the archive (e.g. an essay of backdating obtained from the TLIO, backdating of kitchen words taken from Artusi and Vialardi), suggest thematic itineraries within the site, present in-depth essays on the history of some words (backdating and history of the term “dantophile”, dating of the term “dialect” and its derivatives, history and dating of words in the technical photographic language, analysis of backdated scientific voices) and on the changes made to the computer program to improve the interrogation of published material. The introductory essay by the editor of the volume traces the history of studies aimed at collecting the dates of the first attestation of words, promoted by Bruno Migliorini in the 1940s and then revolutionized in the last twenty years with the introduction of new computer tools.
