Abstract
[Machine translation] Among the many functions performed by early medieval monasteries, that of poles of devotion and cultural memory is particularly significant, due to its material and ideological implications. Northern Italy presents interesting contexts that illustrate the different declinations of the relationship between monasteries and venerated tombs/relics, both in terms of written sources and in terms of archaeological evidence. The contribution focuses on the solutions adopted from time to time to enhance the presence of the saint, at the level of organization of spaces (in abbey churches, in annexed rooms or in chapels), devices for guarding the sacred remains, liturgical furnishings, provisions to regulate the veneration and circulation of devotees.
