Abstract
[Machine translation] We have been experiencing a severe economic crisis for four years now. Despite initial hopes, it is now clear that this is not a normal episode of
This situation is rather of a structural crisis that shows how the growth experienced in previous years had weak foundations.
The situation would be less serious if the issue of sustainability had been perceived correctly, that is, as a concept to refer to the ability to maintain and support our well-being and our development. The frequent interpretation of sustainability in an environmental key has prevented us from seeing that the road we have taken
in recent decades it has been unsustainable even from a strictly economic point of view.
This crisis should make us take sustainability seriously and convince us that this is possible only when its components - economic, social and environmental - support each other. With the present study, we intended to evaluate and compare the
sustainability of the development of Italian regions. The starting reference was a previous analysis, published in an international scientific journal (Floridi
et al. 2011) which here is not only updated, but above all deepened and extended.
