Abstract
[Machine translation] This contribution has highlighted that in family businesses it is not enough to adopt management based exclusively on entrepreneurship and informal tools, but it is necessary to implement managerial mechanisms and involve professional managers, especially when, on the one hand, weaknesses prevail, due to the negative influence of family dynamics on the company, on the other hand, the company becomes complex from a strategic and organizational point of view and undertakes paths of growth and development., The presence, however, of strengths typical of family businesses, which derive from harmonious family values and relationships, based on altruism and a long-term vision, favors the adoption of tools of social and clan control, limiting the need for formal managerial tools, even in large complex companies. This explains the ability of many family businesses, apparently not very managerial, to compete successfully with non-family businesses that are much more structured and formalized., Then, there is no single mode of managerialization and professionalization because, as the contingency theory suggests, the heterogeneity of the universe of family businesses requires the adoption of a set of different tools, consistent with the specific context and characterized by a combination of different mechanisms, both formal and informal., Finally, family businesses are more complex organizations than non-family businesses, due to the presence and role of the family. This requires, even when dealing with company issues, to always consider the context of the family. The determinants of managerialization and professionalization are therefore not only the classic variables proposed by literature, such as the complexity of the company and the external context, but also the characteristics of the family. In turn, the family can use typical business tools, such as performance evaluation systems or strategic planning, to manage some of its critical issues, such as the generational transition or possible opportunistic behavior of family members involved in managerial roles.
