Abstract

[Machine translation] The contribution analyzes the area in which the early Christian episcopal complex of Vercelli was built, subject to important transformations in the Middle Ages and then destroyed in the 18th century, when the church of Santa Maria Maggiore was built a few tens of meters away. This building has a large underground compartment that housed, between the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century, the burials of members of the clergy and the urban aristocracy, whose bodies have been partially preserved through a natural mummification process, as well as ossuaries in which the human remains taken from the ancient episcopal church, on the occasion of its demolition, were placed. On this context and on the entire area, the Universities of Insubria, Eastern Piedmont and the Sabap-Novara Superintendence have started an archaeological and bioarchaeological study, which is first taken into account in the contribution.
