Abstract
[Machine translation] In this essay, the author reflects on the meaning of the formula “Republic founded on work” that opens the Italian Constitution, starting from the Acts of the Constituent Assembly. It identifies the “historical face” - that is, the constitutive essence - of the Republic in the first four articles of the Constitution, and from them draws an idea of “constitutional citizenship” - distinct from legal citizenship - jure laboris, which is nourished by rights, but also by duties, and in particular by the duty to contribute to the material and spiritual progress of the political community of which it belongs.
